Review of the Experimental Models of Heterotopic Liver Transplantation and Consideration of Widespread Clinical Applicability

Abstract
Liver transplantation is now becoming more popularized therapeutic modality of end-stage liver disease with improved immunosuppression and better understanding of basic fransplantation immunology. Tow operative procedures of liver transplantation
are
standardized. The dominant one, orthotopic liver transplantation is considered as the representative of liver transplantation, but it bears the extensiveness of recipient operation. Another one is heterotopic liver transplantation (HPL) which
does
not
carry out immediate host hepatectomy. HPL has several advantages that the surgical insult of host hepatecttomy to the patient of endstage liver desease is avoided, the graft failure does not always require emergent retransplantation, and it can
provide
temporary support to the potetially reversible hepatic failure. Recently several reports about HPL for the patients of acute and chronic heaptic failure showed similar result to orthotopic transplant. Also we reported the functional taking over
by
the
30% partial isoograft after host hepatectomy in the rat. In this study the important aimal models of the research about heterotopic liver transplantation was reviewed. And the successful clinical cases of HPL were reminded for the widespread
clinical
application.
